How to check your inbound links?

So, the heat is on; the tension begins for every webmaster and blogger about the impending update of PageRank by Google.

While most people hold their breath, new comers to the Internet will be expectant with joy. I envy them. I too was like them several years ago when I didn't know the implication of the little green band in the Google tool bar.

I hear that Goggle has started the work and we might see the results in about two weeks. But I already read quite a few outbursts about losing the existing PR. Forum members in several blogger forums have reported losing their PR.

Ok, so, how do you check how many backlinks your website has?
Go to Google.com
Type link:yourdomain name. in the search bar.

Example: link:digg.com

You will instantly see how many sites are linking to you.

What is Google PageRank?

One of the users of my Blog asked for clarification of what is meaning and importance of the Google (PageRank) for the blog and site popularity. There are online arguing among SEO specialists of how important the PR is for improving your site popularity and site indexing in Search Engines, however, everybody agree on the fact of the higher PR - better. Some Q & A on the topic:

What is Pagerank and how does it work?

PageRank is a system implemented by Google that measures a web page’s significance only taking into account the links and links related factors. The fundamentals are that each web page is giving votes to the links on that page and the power of the vote is established by the number of links pointing to the page that gives the vote. The votes are divided among the links on the page so the lesser number of links, the more share of the vote is given to each link.

How often does Google update their PR?

Google representatives, such as engineer Matt Cutts, have publicly indicated that the Toolbar PageRank is republished about once every 3 months, indicating that the Toolbar PageRank values are generally unreliable measurements of actual PageRank value for most periods of the year. However, PR is updated at Google daily (or close to daily). New links are factored into the equation and they are applied to a page’s PR. You just cannot see this PR until Google does its next public PR update.

What is the importance of the Google PageRank?

PageRank is important as it used by Google to determine the quality of a Web site. Having a high PageRank will result in faster and more successful search engine positioning. The basic requirements of a high PageRank are: Good Web Site Structure - Structuring your site in a simple and user-friendly fashion will add to your PageRank. The highest PageRank possible for good structure is PageRank 3. To rank higher than a 3, you need good quality links pointing to your site.

How to check Google PageRank for any Website?

While there are many free services and free programs, that are able to check PageRank for any Website, I would recommend using the new free service URLMetrix that is able to check any URL for multiple metrics like: Google Page Rank, Alexa Rank, Compete Rank, Quantcast Rank, Technorati Rank, Google Indexed, Yahoo Indexed, Google Backlinks, Technorati Blog reactions and lots more.

To give a proper ending for the topic of discussion, I want to present nice lyrical song dedicated to PageRank for all current and prospective Webmasters:

Relevance Spirit Freeware to improve Website Competiveness

"PageRank competition" is a sport usually practiced by webmasters. On the other hand, the management of the pages relevance is not considered as important factor. However, the fact is that some websites, presenting a pretty low pagerank, appear in good competitive conditions based on the search engines results. This is caused by their proper relevance on certain keywords.

In this publication we present RelevanceSpirit, a specialized tool to manage website relevance.

Whatever your current pagerank is, or your future pagerank will be, your classification between the results of the search engines depends significantly on the terms used in your pages, of the number of times that these terms are repeated, and in the way in which they figure in your meta tags.

Relevance approach is strengthening a competitive position of the website and might offer even better results on the long term website exposure, in comparison with the pagerank.

This utility was developed to manage and optimize all the parameters which influence your pages relevance. Software is open source, absolutely free and does not require installation.

Google page rank-does it matter?

Whatever may be our resentment about the page reduction by Google, we have to live with it-right?

Is there anything that we can achieve by carrying our resentment? Obviously not. Yes, I am fully aware that as a pro blogger, my blog is judged by the green band that Google shows.

If I were an Internet marketer like PPP or Blogitive, I would judge a blog's popularity by the number of reads a blog gets. But alas, blog hosts like Google or WP, do not show that important statistics as all the AdSense revenue sharing blogs show.

For example, look at the following posts of mine vs the number of reads it got in Blog Evolve-an AdSense revenue sharing blog in which I am not at all active.

Excellent tool for podcasters. 395 reads
Free resume hosting... 334 reads
Important blocks from getting rich.. 243 reads

Every blog post one makes in an AdSense revenue sharing site gets the authors a lot of readers and some valuable money too.

I can site more examples for your benefit but I think you already realize the importance of getting your blog read than strive for a green band that a software gives.
